Students wanting to participate will form a team of up to four peers of their choice. Teams can be mixed across classrooms but must be from the same building. The team will divide up the reading list of 24 books and start reading! The more books each student reads the better! Each school will be able to send five teams to the competition. If more than five teams are interested in participating, individual schools will hold a preliminary round to determine which five teams will compete at the district level. Teams competing at the district level will be determined by February. Prizes: All participants will receive a pencil, bookmark, and certificate of participation. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. The winning team’s school will receive the traveling trophy that is displayed for the year in the media center. |
Ankeny 5th Grade Reading Relays Official Rules
Each quiz team will consist of up to four students. Questions will alternate between two teams competing in a round. All questions will require the complete, correct title of a book from the reading list as the answer. For example:
1. In which book does the main character learn he is a wizard on his eleventh birthday?
2. In which book does the main character join the Quidditch team?
For both of these questions, the correct answer would be Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Competition Rules:
- Each quiz session will last for 15 minutes with a 5 minute break between sessions. All teams will have the same number of questions per round.
- Each team will have one designated spokesperson during the competitions. When asked a question, the team spokesperson will be allowed 20 seconds to answer, during which time he/she will confer with the other team members. If a correct answer is given in the allotted time, the team will be awarded 5 points.
- If the title is given correctly, the team will be allowed 10 seconds to give the correct last name of the author. Correct author names will be awarded 3 points, for a possible 8 points total per question.
- If a team answers correctly, the next question goes to the other team. If a team answers a question with an incorrect title, the other team will be given 10 seconds to “pick-up” the 5 points - giving the correct title. Play continues with that team taking their turn - receiving the next question - regardless of whether or not the “pick-up” question was answered correctly. If a team “picks-up” a question that the other team missed, they will not be given the opportunity to give the author’s name for points.
- In the event of a round in which 3 teams are competing, no pick-up questions will be allowed. If a team gives the correct title but the incorrect author, the play passes directly to the other team with a new question.
